In a surprising turn of events at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov caused an upset on Wednesday by defeating top seed Carlos Alcaraz 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Despite losing the first set, Dimitrov managed to raise his level of play and improve his serve, ultimately outplaying his Spanish opponent.
Dimitrov, who is still searching for his first title since 2017, will now face Nicolas Jarry in the quarterfinals. Jarry defeated Diego Schwartzman in three sets.
In other matches, Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No. 32 seed, easily defeated J.J. Wolf in straight sets. He will now face either the No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev or No. 12 seed Tommy Paul in the next round.
Thursday’s schedule in Shanghai will feature the match between Ben Shelton and Sebastian Korda as the highlight.
